THE SPIRITUAL LAWS OF LIFE

We are not here just to survive and live long…
We are here to live and know life and its multi-dimensions
To know life in it's richness, in all its variety
And when a man lives multi-dimensionally,
Never shrinks back from any challenge,
Goes to it, welcomes it, rises to the occasion
Then life becomes a flame and burns with passion.

Spiritual laws or higher laws humble and inspire those of us who search for order and direction in our lives. These spiritual laws are guiding principles we can use to steer us through our lives just as the stars guided the ancient mariners on their journeys across the oceans. Knowing the power of these laws is one aspect, applying them in our lives is what makes the difference. They help us to change our perspectives, our habits, our feelings and our actions. If we use the analogy of diving off a diving board into the water of life - these laws will help us to belly flop less often and dive more gracefully.

Dan Millman author of the 'Way of the Peaceful Warrior' says when we align our lives with the spiritual laws of life - challenges remain as do hardships, pain, frustrations and all life throws at us, however we can approach all of these with less struggle - like peaceful warriors embracing the moment - ready to dance or gracefully dive!!

1. THE LAW OF BALANCE

All things exist in a state of balance. Our subconscious is largely responsible for our internal psychological balance, our conscious for

THE PARADOX OF CHOICE

A different look at the power of choice. Schwartz says that choice has paradoxically become a problem not a solution. He says based on research that by eliminating choice we can in fact reduce our stress and anxiety levels. Interesting!

our actions and lifestyle. To achieve balance is entirely dependent on what it means to the individual - we all have different temperaments, dispositions, attitudes etc. We tolerate and thrive on different things. Many of us in fact only find our balance by testing our limits and sometimes the lesson is a tough one. However we all need to work at finding the balance - are you too rigid or sensitive; too overconfident or under confident; too dependent or independent; too much of a taker or a giver? Remember that in everything we do we can either overdo or underdo - however the pendulum will inevitably swing!

What is that you need to Balance - how extreme is your pendulum?

"Every now and then go away and have a little relaxation for when you come back to your work your judgement will be surer, since to remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power…"

Leonardo da Vinci

2. THE LAW OF DISCIPLINE

Freedom of choice is something that we value however often push to the limit - even abuse. Discipline is a habit of doing more, of pushing that bit further, of sticking to something, of focusing, of persisting, of sacrificing, of choosing. The Law of Discipline teaches us to set priorities, to be committed and focused which ultimately will bring us excellence, balance, self-satisfaction, achievement and happiness.

Where is your Discipline lacking - what areas in your life do you need to reassess?

"One half of life is luck the other half is discipline and that's the important half,
for without discipline you wouldn't know what to do with your luck."

Carl Zuckmayer

3. THE LAW OF EXPECTATIONS

The Law of Expectations states that what we believe or expect over time tends to shape our external reality - in other words what we expect, happens - the good old self-fulfilling prophecy. So often we are told 'don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed' - what a tragic way of seeing things because that's probably exactly what you'll get - not too much! Once we learn to appreciate the power and influence of expectations we can change our expectations about ourselves, others and the world and maybe surprise ourselves at what can happen.

What Expectations do you need to change - about yourself, your wants, others?

"The trouble with most people is that they think with their hopes and fears
rather than with their minds."

Will Durant

4. THE LAW OF FLEXIBILITY

Flexibility is the acceptance of rather than resistance to ourselves, others and circumstances. Learning to master this law gives us the opportunity to turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones, problems into opportunities. In becoming more flexible we learn to respond rather than resist. Flexibility involves developing the attitude of "ok here I am and I'll do the best I can to handle this situation." Cats are masters of flexibility - when a cat wants to walk out a door but something/someone is blocking it, it will try to go one way then another but it will also know when to sit back and wait for the opportune moment instead of trying to force its way out. By applying more flexibility to our work, relationships or in fact any aspect of our life will bring greater inner freedom, peace and happiness.

Are you Inflexible in certain areas of your life - do need to bend a little?

"Always fall in with what you are asked to accept. Fall in with it and turn it your way"

Robert Frost

5. THE LAW OF NO JUDGEMENTS

The human race has given itself permission to make judgement calls all the time. We constantly compare and criticise which can lead to anger, frustration, defensiveness and disappointment. If the universe does not judge why are we such experts at it? The law of Judgement teaches us that if we make a mistake we will be given the opportunity to balance the score card and fix it and most importantly to learn. Releasing judgements of our self and others opens up the way for change and freedom. In other words use yourself as your yardstick - not others - stop beating yourself up because of what you've seen someone else do or achieve! Stop wasting your valuable energy checking out every one else - focus on what you want and do it your way.

When last did you make a Judgement call on someone else or yourself?

"If we could read the secret history of our enemies we would find in each man's life a sorrow and suffering
enough to disarm all hostility."

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

6. THE LAW OF PROCESS

Everything has a process - whether it's learning a new sport or hobby or skill - there are always steps to get there. Even looking around you - buildings for example are built from ground or even below ground up - step by step. So why are we so impatient with ourselves in our journey to achieve whatever it is we want to do or get? The Law of Process teaches us to appreciate each step - what we learn on the journey is very often more important than reaching the destination. The pleasure of picking up shells on the beach is much greater than reaching the river. Don't only live for the big high, learn to savour the steps that get you there. Practice patience and pleasure in the growth process - the rewards are immense.

What do you need to do to Savour the steps and the Now?

"One may reach the dawn save by the path of the night."

Kahlil Gibran

A FINAL WORD OR TWO:

Live the life you've imagined.
As you simplify your life the laws of the universe will be simpler
Solitude will not be solitude, Poverty will not be poverty
Nor weakness weakness"

Henry David Thoreau
